Description

One of five sisters, Karen Brown was born in the hinterland of Papua New Guinea in the 60s. Her parents were school teachers and missionaries.

The family spent ten years in that tiny village in PNG, a five day walk from the nearest town. All five children were born in PNG.

They eventually moved back to Sydney, Australia but Karen’s father had nomadic blood and after a couple of years they moved to Yirrkala in the top end of Australia.

Karen talks about her life growing up in that aboriginal community and then completing her schooling in Darwin before becoming a teacher herself. But she always loved art and in 1989, she opened her first art gallery in Darwin. She’s never looked back.

This is Karen’s Territory Story.
