Born in Karratha, Western Australia, Matthew Hull’s family moved around the Pilbara region before settling in Fremantle where he finished high school.
Matthew went on to train as a cook, deciding to give it up the day he qualified. He took on a number of odd jobs before joining the Australian Army in 2009.
After 18 months training as a radio operator he was posted to Tarinkowt in the Uruzgan province of central Afghanistan. Matthew talks about his time in the army including some hair raising encounters.
For the past 18 months, Matthew has worked for a charity, Mates in Construction. It works with construction workers and their families in suicide prevention. Matthew talks about his work in this role and discusses some of the issues causing mental health problems in this industry.
