Shani was born and raised in the Territory. Her father worked for the Navy and was stationed here.
She grew up in Nightcliff and then Humpty Doo, going to Taminmin High School where learnt, amongst other things, how to castrate a goat. Taminmin is a rural school with an agricultural program.
After finishing school Shani got married and had her first of two children. Her husband was a police officer and the family moved to Gove for his posting. She had her second child in Gove but felt lonely when her husband (Paddy) went on secondment. They decided to move back to Darwin after a few years and she decided to re-enter the workforce taking on various roles before finally landing a job as the Member Engagement Manager at Engineers Australia Northern Division.
