In our society, we gauge our quality of life by our bank accounts, how much we can produce, and how much entertainment we can consume. The undercurrent in our thinking says we can get enough to be satisfied, we just haven’t made it there yet. The Scriptures remind us again and again that while we live by “bread”-material goods, it’s not bread alone that can sustain and satisfy us. When we try, the bread goes bitter and so does life.
