Welcoming to the show Dr. Jason Hannan, a well-respected member of the vegan community. He's an Associate Professor in the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, & Communications at the University of Winnipeg, and the editor of "Meatsplaining: The Animal Agriculture Industry and the Rhetoric of Denial" (Sydney University Press, 2020). His current book project is "New White Saviours: The Colonial Rhetoric & Politics of Meat", which examines the meat industry as a form of cultural and ecological imperialism.
Dr. Hannan shares how Winnipeg Vegfest came into fruition, an annual event that brings thousands of people together to celebrate compassionate lifestyles, how important community is to the health of society. We venture into the topic of media literacy especially when it comes to medical science, health, and vaccination. The plant-based community is very pro-science when it comes to the evidence of the effect of whole food plant-based diets on human health, however, there is a growing movement to either distrust science when it comes to medicine OR believes fanatically that whole food plant-based diets are the holy grail to prevent any type of medical intervention - including vaccinations.
Included in this is the idea of Intersectionality, where we include in our compassionate mission for the earth and animals our human neighbours that are oppressed through systemic racism, war, and tyranny.
We are in the midst of a culture war due to misinformation, distrust, and uncertainty "when we are uncertain for a prolonged duration we desperately gravitate towards simple answers." How do we talk to friends and family that are struggling with the pursuit of truth and the scientific method? Listen for some insight on that in this episode.
