On the feast of St. James the Brother of the Lord, Fr. Matthew Howell hones in on a verse from his epistle: "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves" (James 1:22). He ultimately reminds everyone that true faith is love in action (James 2:18), and that love is an action much more than merely an idea. To be practical, he gives a list of ideas of how people can move from being hearers to doers of the word of God. Along the way Fr. Matthew talks about the righteous life and martyric death of St. James, makes a claim about St. James winning the Orthodox writing Triple Crown, ties in the Gospel passage from Luke 8:26-39 to point out the difference between knowing about God instead of knowing God and following Him, opens with an example from Jim Gaffigan's standup comedy, uses his own futility in physical fitness as another example of being a hearer rather than a doer, and even finds time to quote St. Paul from 2 Corinthians 6:2.
