Description

As a guest preacher at Saint Athanasius Antiochian Orthodox Church in Sacramento, California, Fr. Matthew Howell gave this homily on the Sunday in October in which the Orthodox Church commemorates the holy fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council (commemorated on the Sunday between October 11-17 in the Antiochian Patriarchate). He starts by explaining how the ancient Celtic peoples believed in "thin places" where heaven and earth meet, then goes on to talk about how our hearts need to become thin places that reflect and transmit the Light of God. He also discusses icons as "thin places" or bridges to the heavenly realm and tells stories from his pilgrimage during the past week to venerate St. John of San Francisco and St. Sebastian of Jackson. Along the way, he quotes from the Old Testament, the New Testament, The Lego Movie and makes a reference to a very expensive football stadium roof.
