On the tenth Sunday after Pentecost, Fr. Matthew Howell ambitiously tackles four different subjects during his homily.
- He reminds his people of his homily from the feast of the Dormition two weeks earlier and encourages them to pick up the St. Herman Bible Reading Challenge printed in the narthex or found on the parish website.
- He apologizes for his tone during a certain part of the previous week's homily.
- He discusses the issue of forgiveness in light of the reading from Matthew 18:23-35, emphasizing that forgiveness should be given regardless of whether it is asked for by the offending party, and that we often have thousands of lifetimes of "debt" (offenses) for which we need to ask God for His forgiveness.
- He tells two stories about St. Moses of Ethiopia, tying in his lack of judgment against a brother to the issue of forgiveness mentioned in the previous topic.
Along the way, he references Don Henley's song "Heart of the Matter" and also illustrates how forgiveness is more like a dimmer switch than a toggle switch.
