Description

This week, we’re joined by returning guest Emerson Corleone to talk about a cult classic from Tony Scott (RIP) and Quentin Tarantino, 1993’s “True Romance”. This tone-bending and quick-witted film is soaked in that early 90’s vibe and attitude and boasts a stacked cast and some of the best writing ever. The characters are wild, the action is brutal, and one critic described it as “the cinematic equivalent of cocaine-flavored bubble-gum: a bright, flavoursome confection that had an intoxicatingly violent kick.” It’s stylish, out there, and extremely well done.

Believe us when we say that this movie is lightning in a bottle. “True Romance” definitely isn’t PC and is very much a product of it’s time, but you cannot deny that it’s filled to the brim with a wild energy that only Scott and Tarantino could put together. The incredible writing of Tarantino meeting early Tony Scott filmmaking just works. It’s like magic. We all love this movie and hadn’t seen it in years, so this one was really fun.

Led by Christian Slater (and his wild hair) as Clarance and Patricia Arquette as Alabama reenacting Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” with a briefcase of mobster cocaine, the film is made better by the insane supporting cast (who are firing on all cylinders) that includes heavy-hitters like Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, Chris Penn, Tome Sizemore, and James Gandolfini as a proto-Tony Soprano. All of the characters are bonkers. The action is crazy. The humour is sublime.

We spend most of this episode gushing about the movie, talking about our favourite scenes, exploring early Tarantino and Tony Scott’s career, talking about Tarantino’s role as “the movie guy”, sharing our experience rewatching the movie again after a long time, and musing on the film’s crazy score. We also give Emerson and his cohorts their flowers and chat about his excellent new collaborative EP “Violets N’ Furs” with Majickbeats. If you have a chance, check it out. It rules. Huge thanks to Emerson for joining us again and for suggesting such a rad film.

Catch you next week, homies!
