Galatians 6:7-8 (NET 2nd Ed.)
“Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool. For a person will reap what he sows, because the person who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.”
The spiritual law of sowing and reaping is not something we can turn on or off nor can we manipulate it. We don’t determine the outcome either. That’s already determined based on what we choose to sow just as we can’t sow spring wheat and then expect to harvest cucumbers.
Hence, the only thing we have control over is what we sow. But consider for a moment what an immense amount of control that is. We can actually decide day by day what we want our future to be. There is truly a sense in which God says to each of us, you decide.
Thankfully, the options are straightforward and limited to two: corruption or eternal life.
The sowing process is also straightforward. Just as we sow seeds into something — the ground — so we sow thoughts into something — “the flesh” or “the Spirit.”
“The flesh” could be summed up as the universal desire to do what we want when we want to regardless of what God may want. To sow to the flesh then would mean that we set aside what in us knows better and proceed to sow thoughts to our on-the-spot interests. The harvest, however, will be corruption, destruction, ruin, decay.
Conversely, sowing to “the Spirit” means we devote our thoughts to determining what pleases God. The harvest will be peaceful, purposeful living, characterized by the joy of being constantly helpful.
