Matthew 7:13,14 — “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Why is the gate small that leads to life? One thing Jesus may be wanting us to understand is that not much fits through that small gate, perhaps only this: a completely deflated ego. If that’s not the case, we won’t be able to get through.

What is a deflated ego? If I’m reading it right, devotional writers from years ago referred to our ego as “the self”. They wrote about the “self life” as an attitude in us that wants everything to go our way, essentially, an inflated ego. We think we know best.

That, I’m suggesting, is what Jesus’ words are aimed at. There is simply no way anyone who thinks he knows best can make it through the small gate and onto the narrow road. Not until we are convinced once for all that only God knows best can we squeeze through and head up the road to life.
