Here’s a quote by Jordan Peterson:
“If you want to be excellent,
staying consistent with your goals and positive habits
over time
will separate you from the herd of mediocrity.
It all starts with a goal.
If you don’t have a destination in mind,
you’re just adrift at sea going with the flow.”
Notice: “It all starts with a goal.”
I suggest to you that that goal needs to be big enough
to ultimately meet our deepest needs.
Just what are our deepest needs? Four come to mind:
1. significance: our need to always know we matter in life
2. security: our need to always feel safe
3. serenity: our need for constant peace of mind and heart
4. joy: our need for real and lasting happiness
Now let’s take a step back and ask, WHY WERE WE CREATED?
The answer? For God
In Hebrews 2:10 — with reference to God — we read that all things exist through him and for him.
In other words, the universe comes out of God, by means of God, for God.
But also, For Jesus
In Colossians 1:16 we read, “For by him [Jesus] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him.”
What does “for him” mean?
1. He created each of us for his personal enjoyment through having a unique and intimate friendship with each of us.
2. He created us to cowork with him in the joyful adventure of helping everyone we know become his friend too.
Let’s add all this together: So what is the ultimate goal?
It is to be God's friend and coworker in this world.
To the extent that we make that aim the very center of our lives we will enjoy it’s fruit: constant significance, security, peace, and joy.
