In Matthew 10:39 we read where Jesus said, “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
What was Jesus referring to by either finding or losing ones life? One way of looking at this is by associating finding ones life with self regard, and losing ones life with self disregard.
Let me put it this way, perhaps the only justifiable reason for thinking of oneself is on account of what may be required for us to stay attentive to Jesus and his purposes for us.
It could be said that the quintessential lie within satan’s every lie is this: regard yourself — trust your perspective, your answers, what you think is the way to go. That’s finding oneself, and in the end its spells total disaster.
Losing oneself, on the other hand, is self disregard. In that case, for the sake of what Jesus wants to do through us in helping others get to know God, we pay only as much attention to ourselves as it takes to keep focusing our attention back on Jesus.
