Have you ever wondered what God’s ultimate purpose is behind his activity in our lives? Allow me to give you what I think it is.

Consider this verse: Colossians 1:16 (NIV) With reference to Jesus we read, that

“… in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.”

Take note of those last two words: “for him.” All creation was created “for him”, that is, for Jesus.

But what does “for him” mean?

I suggest to you it means, “for his personal enjoyment” — which is to say — for his glory.

Then what brings him greatest enjoyment — greatest glory?

I suggest it is first to choose to be his friend and second to cooperate with him as he helps us grow in friendship with himself.

As the friendship grows his enjoyment of us grows which is to say, Jesus is increasingly glorified in us.

So, back to the question. Allow me to personalize it: What is God’s ultimate purpose behind his activity in your life today? Your friendship: he works day and night, works and works and works to be your best friend forever.
