Never forget this simple truth:
misery cannot come from wholesome thinking.
Deviate, and to that degree
life’s difficulties will be tormenting.
Harbor wholesome thoughts,
and, come what may,
your heart will remain peaceful.
Don’t fool yourself:
with mathematical certainty,
every thought you entertain
either fuels purposeful living
or invites disaster.
So now, let’s ask, What are wholesome thoughts? Thoughts that reflect the Holy Spirit’s influence — thoughts of being helpful, patient, and kind, forgiving, reliable, and honest. Thoughts of cherishing and honoring others. Thoughts of seeking God, of trusting him, being true to him, of doing what pleases him.
And what is it to deviate? Thoughts that reflect self-regard, self-aggrandizement, self-promotion, self-reliance — thoughts of pursuing my own interests at all costs, of resolving tension or problems in my life in my way.
So never forget this simple truth: wholesome thinking will never give birth to misery.
