All we need to know is only that which is essential to living a life of friendship with Jesus, which is to say, living a life of self-sacrificial helpfulness. I’m using the word helpfulness as a synonym for the word love. As the apostle Paul taught, we might have all kinds of remarkable spiritual gifts and a faith that can move mountains but if it is not helpful to others, what we do or what we are amounts to nothing.
So here’s a simply exercise in self-evaluation: invite the Lord to examine every aspect of your daily life — thoughts, words, attitudes, actions — and ask, is this in some way helping me be a more helpful person to those around me? Jesus, in every way possible, am I truly being your friend?
