The thought occurred to me today that perhaps there is ultimately only one good reason for doing anything: am I doing what I do because of how precious people are to me?
Now, on second thought, we might ask, what about loving God as the one good reason?
In answer to that it may be helpful to distinguish between the most important reason for doing something and the most important reality in our lives. God must be the most important reality in our lives, but he is that to us only when our greatest reason for doing what we do is because people are so precious to us.
Remember these words from the Apostle John? “…Whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” (1 John 4:20)
So if there is ultimately only one good reason for doing anything, and it is because we treasure people, then that means God is the most important reality in our lives.
