In Hebrews 3:15 (NIV) we read, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
What habits keep our hearts receptive to God's counsel? Of the likely many habits, allow me to suggest just three:
1) Practice thinking of the kind of person you most want to be throughout the day, especially as you see it in Jesus. One way of doing that is to pray: keep on asking, seeking, and knocking for the Lord to grant you your heart’s desire.
2) Believe that your prayer is being answered as you do what your life’s commitments require of you. And when he shows you something specific you need to do, act on it. That is Jesus keeping you on the best path forward.
3) When making a decision, pay careful attention to act on any internal doubt that says to you, in effect, “avoid that” or “probably not a good idea.” Just as it is wise to pay attention to those inner alerts with physical safety issues, so it is with spiritual safety.
