In a recent podcast I listed 4 of what I consider to be essential human needs. I’ve since added a 5th. Then I looked at each one in the light of what it means to belong to Jesus Christ. In fact, I’ve been wondering if in just belonging to Jesus we would discover that all these critical needs are completely addressed. You make the call.
1. SIGNIFICANCE: our need to know we matter in life
If you belong to Jesus Christ
you have as your best friend
the greatest friend anyone can have
— the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords —
who nonetheless uniquely enjoys you and your companionship.
2. SECURITY: our need to feel safe
You no longer own
what you have —
Jesus does.
You no longer decide
how you’ll meet
your mental, emotional,
physical, or spiritual needs —
Jesus does.
3. GUIDANCE: our need to know what to do next
You no longer decide
what you’ll do
with the day —
Jesus does.
You no longer decide
how you’ll handle
this or that problem —
Jesus does.
4. SERENITY: our need for peace of mind and heart
You no longer shoulder
your fears, cares, worries,
regrets, or heartaches —
Jesus does.
5. JOY: our need for real and lasting happiness
You no longer decide
how interested you’ll be
in someone else’s wellbeing
for if you belong to Jesus Christ
you’re personal preferences
are your deadly enemies
and he is your life
— constant unconditional helpfulness —
that in anyone’s presence says,
nothing matters to me more
right now
than what Jesus wants to do in you
and I am honored and blessed
that he’s giving me this chance
to show you something more
of how precious you are to him.
So I say, that in belonging to Jesus we experience what the apostle Paul meant when he wrote, “In Christ all the fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form. And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” Colossians 2:9,10
