I heard a remark the other day that had me rewinding immediately to write it down. The person said, “When I do the little things right, then God takes care of the big things.” (R F Kennedy)
It reminded me of the words of Jesus to that effect from Luke 16:10 — “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
So here’s the situation. By far and away, our days are made up of what could be considered “little things”. Things such as picking up after ourselves, keeping things clean, and putting things in order. That means that every day we have a chance to incrementally grow more trustworthy and responsible just by virtue of how we handle those little things.
And all the while, God is watching. He is eager, if you will, to entrust us with more and more responsibility. Why? Because the more responsible we are the more he can extend his influence into the lives of all who will benefit from our growing reliability. However, no matter how trustworthy we are with little things, we will always feel like the big stuff is beyond us. That’s a mentally and emotionally healthy attitude. But we don’t need to shy away from the bigger stuff because when we do the little things right, God will help us take care of the big things too.
