In Psalms 78:40-41 we read this of the Israelites after God delivered them out of Egypt — “How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland! Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.”
What is it to “put God to the test”? It is when, facing a problem, we make it clear that only if the Lord resolves it in a particular way and right when we want it solved will we believe that he truly cares for us or that he is powerful enough to help us.
In contrast to that is to live knowing that “the Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” so I entrust my need to him, believing that he can and will resolve it in the best way possible and at just the right time.
