1 John 2:17 — “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

As long as we set our sights on being right or on proving we are right, or on changing ourselves or changing others, we will live in perennial inner frustration. Why? Because if we are honest, once we examine our motives, we will see that what we think is right is never right enough. And as far as changing ourselves or others goes, if we could do that we would have got the job done a long time ago.

But suppose we just accept where we at and where others are at — warts and all — and practice displacing such get-things-right thinking with a passion to daily live the answer to this question:

What does God want of me in this world? That is, what does he want from me in relationship to my spouse, my children, my friends, my neighbors, my enemies?

If we were to make that our dominant concern, I’m persuaded we would soon discover God to be our best friend, our strength to act, and our guide in answering that question day by day, situation by situation. And on top of that, “whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
