Scripture text: Joel 2:15-32
Preacher: Moses Tang
I. Introduction
- The first trumpet in Joel chapter 2 verse 1 called upon God’s people to take a hard look at the divine judgements and chastisements and trials of faith in the eye of the storm.
- The second trumpet in Joel chapter 2 verse 15 called upon God’s people to turn from their sins that the Lord may restore the locust-eaten years to them and blesses them with seasons of spiritual revival.
II. Repentance vv. 15-17
“Here again the Prophet reminds them that there was a need of deep repentance for not only individuals had transgressed, but the whole people had become guilty before God, and we also know how many and grievous their sins had been. There is no wonder then that the prophet requires a public profession of confession.” John Calvin
- Who? All of God’s people; The greatest to the youngest (yes even nursing infants) and including those who are on official leave and bliss.
- It is not a casual gathering of God’s people but a “press them to come together” assembly to address this very urgent matter.
- How? Turn from our sins. Set aside a time for fasting and prayer. Plead for the Lord’s mercy. Pray for the Lord’s blessing.
III. Restoration vv. 18-27
“See how ready God is to succour and relieve his people, how He waits to be gracious; as soon as ever they humble themselves under his hand, and pray and seek his face, He immediately meets them with His favours.” Matthew Henry
- The Lord will be merciful to His people.
- The Lord will bless His people materially.
- The Lord will protect His people from their enemies.
But the greater blessings are:
- The Lord will restore the locust-eaten years to His people.
- The Lord will be in the midst of His people.
IV. Revival vs 28-32
“The prophet had encouraged the nation to repentance by announcing the temporal blessings which would be consequent thereon. This was the lower sphere of blessings consequent to their repentance...Now the prophet mentions the higher blessings to follow, - the spiritual, of which the temporal was but a type.” Biblical Illustrator
- The Lord will bless His people with seasons of spiritual revival. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- The fulfilment of this prophecy took place on the Day of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2. And the Lord continues to pour out His Spirit in great measure upon the church from time to time for His glory.
- I for one am praying, working, and watching for seasons of spiritual revival.
