Today I'm joined by Dr Joe Garrihy a Criminologist from Maynooth University. Listen as Joe maps out the rationale for developing the Unlocking Potential Project after working in partnership with Mountjoy Prison. The project which utilises skills across Maynooth innovation, criminology and law, the Irish prison service, probation, IPRT and the voice of lived experience is breaking new ground regarding access to university and further education. The team at Maynooth have received financial support via the Working to Change Kickstarter Funds which has enabled them to work in partnership with other institutions to offer scholarships. These scholarships are quite unique in supporting individuals with former experience or contact with the justice system. Moving forward they are keen to explore the approach with others in the field of education across Ireland-North/South.
