Welcome back to But What Do We Know! This week, before diving into the topic of discussion, Zoe and Daniel play a little game they call "Guess That Word." Daniel has to guess the meaning of certain Yiddish words that Zoe teaches him and Zoe has to do the same with a few Guyanese words. We later unpack the phrase "You're So Exotic" as we talk about the normalized fetishization and degradation of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds and our personal experiences with this phenomenon. We chat about how we see this type of language appear in mainstream pop culture and we also offer a few suggestions for what you could say instead of the dreaded "What are you?" or "Where are you from?" We understand that not all of our listeners can identify with these experiences and we invite any and all conversation from people of all different backgrounds and viewpoints. We're excited to hear from you and thank you for listening!
