We tend to believe that truly evil people are the great exception; that figures such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and other mass murderers represent extremes of ethical degeneration, and that “normal people could never sink to such vile depths. Yet is that really true? Could it not be that “monsters” such as the ones named above were exceptional only because they had the opportunity to wreak havoc, and that there are many “average” people living among us who would be every bit as evil, if given half a chance?
