If you're an indie author your book cover needs to look just as good as the big publishers' covers. That's the truth. Don't skimp on cover art and/or graphic design. Book covers matter. I see way too many indie covers that look indie. That's not good.
Readers DO judge a book by its cover. So you may have the most beautiful prose or the best story, but if your book cover isn't on point in regards to genre, then readers will swipe past it. If it looks amateur, readers will assume your writing is amateur.
