The idea of compulsory military service in countries that are not at war or do not have a war culture has always bewildered me, first because there is no social motivator to require participation, nor a professional motivator to maintain a career; second because it is essentially a bad tax investment when assuming that the education system is already functioning normally. Perhaps it is for the second reason that I understand the consideration of mandatory service, however I do not come up with many comments on this, but I do come up with questions whose answers I would like to see brought up by the political parties themselves, and their militants. Portugal does not have compulsory military service, but it is an idea that comes up a lot in conversations. The points I want to question is how to build this idea in the culture at the center of the political environment, and within the international context of our country.
