Description

Here we go! On this episode we dissect the first couple of chapters of the book Gentleman Jim by Mimi Mathews. Spoiler - Amy was right (was there any doubt?) and we have jumped ahead to 10 years after our prologue. We catch up with our heroine Maggie but our alleged hero Nick is no longer in the picture. . .and surprisingly not even mentioned or thought of. Seems odd but we will go with it. Maggie is a shell of her formal self recovering from a truly mysterious illness, Fred is as awful as he was in the prologue but inexplicably Maggie wants to save his life, and we meet Maggie's BFF Jane who we adore!

While reading these chapters, we couldn't help but wonder:

- Where is Nick and why is he not even referenced in passing?

- How is Fred still walking around a free man and not in jail for falsely accusing and beating a person?

- Why does this heroine keep saying she doesn't have any other options - when she clearly does have many other options but is choosing to make the bad decision of settling for Fred?

- What is with all the cloak and dagger secrecy around Maggie's illness? Somehow not talking about it directly makes it more mysterious?

Some of our predictions for this book include:

- Maggie was sick because she was pregnant and had a miscarriage (surprisingly, this was not a wild Amy prediction but one of Beth's. Amy said, how? And with whom?)

- Nick is coming back into Maggie's life incognito as someone else, perhaps as a gentleman as he planned to become in the prologue?

- The real question is - will Maggie recognize him when he shows up in her life again?
