Description

This episode we continue our serial recap of the book How to Wake a Sleeping Lady by Bree Wolf. In this installment, we cover the tenth chapter, entitled "A Carriage Ride". We thought it would be more interesting than just Nessa and Grant in a carriage but we were wrong. It is essentially what it sounds like - two people reintroducing themselves awkwardly throughout the course of a carriage ride back home. Nessa is warry and cautious, Grant is stalky and obsessive - just a typical Tuesday for these two.

We are still really trying to find redeeming qualities in Grant . . . and this author is not making it easy. Is she a genius? Or just oblivious to what a self-centered tool he is? It is really hard to temper the snark when talking about this hero we love to hate. And the topic is so hotly debated that we begin to question why we are still reading this book. One positive thing is the two protagonists in our story seem to be having a more open, honest conversation than they have had previously. And Nessa is sticking up for what she wants/needs from this relationship - and lays down some important ground rules for Grant that will hopefully drive the narrative in a better direction going forward. Good for you girl!

We try to make the connections between this story and the fairy tale it is loosely based on - Sleeping Beauty - and also identify plot points that just miss their mark. Best of all is when Beth points out an interesting note she made about the coachman's reaction to seeing Nessa - Amy's spidey senses are tingling with conspiracy theory vibes again! Just when Amy had given up hope that this book would be more interesting than a lame love story . . . twist! Now we are definitely committed for at least one more chapter to see how that plot point unfolds.

Some questions we are left pondering by the end of this chapter:

- Is that a wrap on Genie? She is foisted off on someone else and no longer our problem and we will never speak of her again?

- We know Grant is not going to spill the beans on Genie. So who will drop the bomb on that one - Millie? Wicked mother-in-law? Father?

- As much as we harp on Grant for not telling his wife about Genie - we play devil's advocate to contemplate when it would be the right time to tell her. Has that moment passed? Is there ever a right time?
