Prologue
Lance Devereaux took stock of his situation. He was knee high in filthy water in a pond infested with frogs - so many blasted frogs! And yet although he could hear the frogs all around him he was unable to catch a single one. As he sinks deeper into the muddy bottom of this godforsaken pond, his mind contemplates the series of events that has led him to this moment and his quest for an elusive frog. He is ankle deep in mud, he is soaking wet, devilishly cold, and covered liberally in pond scum. And one question runs incessantly through his mind - how did I get from that that night to here?
Six months ago . . . at a ball in London in the time of the Prince Regent
Chapter 1: Ballroom Blunder
Miss Emma - please call me Esmerelda - Baker is enjoying her first, and most likely only, London season. She is an older debutante having reached the ripe old age of twenty-five. She had often dreamed and longed for a season in London to find her Prince Charming and true love. Alas, the dream seemed impossible until an unexpected inheritance from her Godmother bequeaths her with a dowry and enough money for a London season. I mean, can it get any more fairy tale than that? Armed with a list of eligible bachelors and copious hours pouring over every romance novel she can get her hands on, Emma is ready to find love and her perfect Happily Ever After. But a blunder in a ballroom throws her perfectly laid plans off course . . . or perhaps, just maybe, this blunder corrects the course of her life to lead her to her truly happy ending.
