"Time after time God reminds Isreal that they do not deserve his blessings any more than the Egyptians or the Canaanites do. They deserve to be judged and destroyed as much as the pagan peoples do—perhaps even more because of rebelling against God in spite of all their benefits (Num 14:11). But God chose freely to make a name for himself by pouring out undeserved grace on Israel and well-deserved justice on the wicked nations of Canaan, whose sins had, at last, been filled up (Gen. 15:16). Or as the apostle Paul would say, God was making known his wrath and power in order to make known the riches of his glory on the vessel of mercy (Rom. 9:22-23)." —John Piper
