Getting into chapter 2 of 1st John... We are reminded that all of 1st John is a letter written to a particular group of people and that John has a particular message he is writing this group of people. We must take all of what we read in the context of the whole letter, realizing that John is writing to people he knows are believers. He is encouraging them that they can expect to have the desire to want to be in fellowship with one another...Taking sections of a letter and not considering the context of the letter or what comes before and after it, can lead us into wrong assumptions about what John is writing.
