Amaranatha Ranatunga is the first Sri Lankan to lecture the Classical and Flamenco Guitar in an university and also the first Asian to developed a syllabus for Classical and Flamenco Guitar for four year BA degree (Bachelor of Performing Arts) & Master of Arts (MA) Degree Program for those guitar styles.

He is a Recording Artist, Author & Lecturer has been actively performing regularly throughout his guitar career. in 1964 he began studying with American classical guitarist Mervyn Sanders and Indrani Silva. In 1977 he studied with Flamenco Guitar from Mexican flamenco guitarist, Fredric Bruno.
