Today I wanted to talk about the importance of reading. It’s something that we tend to only associate with school. Whether it be reading a textbook or an article for an assignment, sometimes we forget the importance of reading just for fun, with no correlation to a grade with it.
With the SAT in all of our futures, reading can be a purposeful tool with things like reading comprehension and vocabulary. When you read, you are learning new words contextually, and subconsciously understanding the definition, instead of making flashcards and simply memorizing.
If we go into the science of it, reading strengthens the neurons in your brain contributing to a longer attention span, concentration, and can even help reduce stress levels. For some, reading can be a form of meditation.
Now you might be thinking, after a long day of intense study and concentration, the last thing I want to do is pick up a book and read. I completely understand that it’s easier to turn to Netflix and Tiktok as a way to relax and end the day. But I challenge you to find a book that has nothing to do with school. Something fun, maybe a murder mystery, or fantasy book. Find something that you can read purely for pleasure.
Below are some of my favorite book recommendations, so if you have the interest to start your reading, suggest starting with these modern-day classics.
