Today we share Part 3 of our conversation with the Class of 1961. 60 years ago, the class departed the campus when President Kennedy was leading the nation in the so-called, Camelot years. A month before their graduation, in April of 1961, the botched invasion of Cuba known as the Bay of Pigs took place, as did America seeing the Soviet Union send the first man into space. As they went off to college, the Berlin Wall was being built. In November 60 years ago, President Kennedy would send 18,000 military advisors to South Vietnam, escalating U.S. involvement. We know what followed in the Vietnam War.
For the Class of 1961, the events were serious, not unlike our times in the world today. As students at St. Margaret’s, we have a unique privilege to meet the women of our sisterhood who share with us their experiences in our riverfront school. On the banks of our noble river, we grow in grace with those who came before.
