"Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you."
--Shannon Adler (inspirational author and therapist)
My husband's Grandpa Matt Hoffman passed away peacefully earlier this week. I had just recently really gotten to know him. Since the middle of July, I had visited him about once a week. Now sometimes I wasn't available. Sometimes he wasn't feeling well. But we got together and talked about his family, his memories, his thoughts...his life.
I just brought my phone along and set it on the linoleum table between us. I'd bring up a subject and he'd talk. When he glossed over something, I'd try to get more details. Sometimes I'd repeat names to make sure I understood who he was talking about. (He often would refer to people, long gone, like they were people everyone knew.)
From my first interview on July 12th, through my last interview on November 8th, I have a little over 12 hours of memories, thoughts, ramblings, laughter, and LEGACY.
Now, these conversations are not a memoir. There is no storyline, no character development, he didn't speak with the goal to capture your imagination and draw you into his life.
No.
He was just sharing.
We had conversations where I was interested in the life he lived.
What did he want me and others to know...to remember?
In today's episode, I'm sharing with you the beginning of our very first talk. I begin our conversation with, "The goal of this is...we just want to sit down and talk about you and your stories...what you remember from your childhood...and all the things."
In the next weeks, I will transcribe his memories and put these together with pictures that I took during my visits, scanned into the computer, and then returned on my next visit.
We will put this all together through Sidetracked Legacies and publish it into a beautiful hardcover book for family and close friends. This will be an invaluable keepsake for those who knew him and loved him. It will be a treasured resource to share with the children of his children's children...and their children!
