The Moon has a diameter of about 3,474 kilometers and is about 384,400 kilometers from Earth. It orbits Earth every 27.3 days. The Moon is believed to have formed about 4.51 billion years ago. The Moon is important for many reasons. It is a source of light in the night sky, it helps to keep Earth's days and nights the same length, and it is a very important object in the study of astronomy.
