The Planet Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is known as the Red Planet. Mars is a rocky, barren world with a thin atmosphere. It has long been a source of speculation and mystery for humans. Mars is named after the Roman god of war. It is often described as the "Red Planet" because of its reddish appearance. Mars is a small planet with a diameter of only about 4,200 miles (6,800 kilometers). It has a very thin atmosphere that is mostly carbon dioxide. Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. Mars is the home of the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons.
