What are the forces and dynamics that shape and influence the patterns in which our particular personality thinks, emotes and acts? This inquiry is often framed as the question “Is it nature or nurture?” or “Is it my biology or my biography?” In other words, have the ways I’ve been consistently showing up in the world been primarily determined by the way I was designed (nature/biology), or, the experiences I have encountered in my life, whether good, bad or indifferent (nurture/biography)? Most have generally concluded that at the very least it is some combination of the two dynamics.
But what if there is a third dynamic at play here, something in addition to the interweaving influence of the two dynamics mentioned above? What if each of us have also ‘forgotten‘ something essential about ourselves and the way we were uniquely designed to both bless the world and enjoy life?
Join us on this episode to hear some of those dynamics playing out in the story Karen Nelson shares of her life so far. Even beginning with a childhood of severe sexual abuse and family violence, moving through the trauma of multiple cancer diagnoses, and on to a struggle with alcoholism, we begin to suspect there is something more at work in Karen’s life than nature and nurture.
And where else on the internet are you going to hear terms like ‘pokey’, ‘gobsmacked' and ‘applecart’ in one sitting!?
