TRANSCRIPT

“The verb ‘to binge’ is defined as to’ indulge in an activity, especially eating, drinking, or taking drugs.’ This word is often used when discussing drinking alcohol or eating excessively.

In college, you often hear about students binge drinking, which means to just drink and drink and drink. This kind of drinking often leads to severe hangovers the following day, or sometimes alcohol poisoning, and sometimes even death.

“But, today, the verb ‘binge’ is often associated with excessive watching of television programs in one sitting on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu, for example.”

“On days like today, a rainy day with typhoon #10 of the season passing by Tokyo and Chiba, it’s fun to binge watch television series online, even if they are mind-numbingsometimes. What I mean is that you kind of get sucked into some shows, regardlessif it’s good or not. Regardless if it’s what you want to watch or not.”

“Soon, you’re sitting there with your eyes glued to the TV screen, or the computer screen, or the smart phone screen. You are zoning out, and before you know it, 2 or 3 hours have flown by. Where does the time go? Nobody knows. It’s all so addicting.”

“Sometimes, when I ‘think’ I want to watch something, I log onto Netflix, and I scroll. I scroll and scroll, looking for something good to watch. If I don’t see anything, I start back at the top again. I might need a fresh pair of eyes, so sometimes I call a friend and ask them to log on, too and help me find something. Sometimes, I spend 30 minutes to an hour scrolling for something to watch. That’s the same amount of time it would take to actually watch a show. It has long been said that Baseball is America’s pastime. I think scrolling for something to watch is the new national pastime.”
