DECEPTION VS. DIVINE TRUTH: John delivers a direct challenge to deeply rooted human nature: the universal tendency to blame shift and self-justify, a pattern seen from Adam and Eve to the self-righteous Pharisee. If we claim to be without sin, we are simultaneously deceiving ourselves (a parallel statement found in verse 8) and making God a liar.
