Veggie tacos & animism w Jam Doughty
Saint Sparklebear sits down with artist and nature educator Jam Doughty. We share veggie tacos replete with ALL the veg (avocado, spinach, onion, pepper and mushroom) and plantains for dessert. Jam teaches the littlest humans at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. We discuss how to teach empathy, living and creating with neurodivergence and how being nonbinary shaped their view of the world and their art.
Jam’s art plunges us into a state of magical realism where everything, whether animate or inanimate, is alive and pulsing with life. From a spiritual stance that could be described as pragmatic animism, Jam reminds us that despite all of our complexity and culture and ideology, human beings are just animals. But Complex and glorious animals living within and among a vast and mind blowing ecosystem that we have only begun to truly understand.
