I have been a teacher and trainer for over 20 years. After working in some of the hardest to staff school and dealing with complex trauma on a daily basis, I became convinced that Trauma Informed Practice is the true way forward for future leadership.
Nearly 30% of the workforce in 2025 will be Gen Z, and 30%of them suffer from complex trauma.
After being involved in a number if violent incidents in the high school where I was punched, shoved, assaulted when trying to break up fights, I temporarily left teaching to do support work. I felt this would be a safer way for me to work and it was getting hard being subjected to daily violence and trying to protect kids from assaults when there was little support from school leadership.
The client I was taking care of was unfortunately very troubled and dangerous. One night, she threated to start a fire, held my head over live electrical wires while watching them spark and held me hostage for hours while waiting for emergency services to arrive. Shortly after this incident, I was diagnosed with PTSD.
