प्रत्येक धर्म में पूजा-पाठ के समय माला द्वारा जप भी किया जाता है। हिन्दू धर्म में 108 मोतियों की माला द्वारा जप करने का विधान है। जप करते समय दाएं हाथ की मध्यमा उंगली के बीच के पोर पर माला रखकर अंगूठे से माला के एक-एक मोती को अपनी ओर खींचना चाहिए। लेकिन यह ध्यान रखें की माला के मोती एक दूसरे पर न गिरें. अतः माला के मोती ठीक से गुंथे हुए होने चाहिए। जप करते समय मेरु के आते ही मला को उलट देना चाहिए। मेरु को लांघकर जप करना शास्त्र सम्मत नहीं है.
