Marquis Wright-Lee | Talks Anime, Remembering Smyte IX, and Starting A Message Therapy Business

Marquis is an observer and helper. Growing up as an only child, Marquis spent a lot of time alone (although he did have his cousins from time to time), but also taking in what was around him and realizing that he wanted to be seen, be useful, not as an 'in the spotlight' kind of way, but as someone that could "add to" a larger thing. This desire led him to exploring paths, massage, spoken word poetry, and candle making, that would change his life in ways he never anticipated.

Marquis' journey with spoken word poetry began in 2010 at the Community College of Philadelphia under the tutelage of Dr. Michelle Myers of the poetry group Yellow Rage. He has since performed his poetry in various venues (including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Busboys and Poets, Apache Cafe, World Cafe Live, The African American Museum in Philadelphia), colleges and universities along the east coast, and has also been tapped by two Philadelphia Poet Laureates for featured performances. In 2015, Marquis made the Fuze Poetry Slam team and slammed at the National Poetry Slam in Oakland, CA, and went on to become one of the core organizers for the Fuze in 2017.  Marquis has released two books of poetry (“Earning the Title of Poet” and “[meanwhile…]”) as well as hosted events from book releases to open mics and local poetry slams to CUPSI (College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational) in 2018 and served as a poetry coach to a Philly Slam League poetry team (at his former high school George Washington Carver) in Philadelphia.

Marquis is a graduate of the National Massage Therapy Institute and has been a licensed therapist since 2012. He uses a blend of techniques acquired from years of training to tailor each massage to his clients needs. Marquis fully believes and often echos that massage is restorative, preventative, and maintenance care that should be taken advantage of by everyone in order to maintain the fullest life possible.
