On Tuesday, the heart of segregation, racism, and the capital of the Confederacy broke the chains of the past and invited a renaissance if you will, of culture, resurgence, and change to the South’s, birth of civil rights, and Alabama’s capital city of Montgomery, with the election of Judge Steven Reed, as the first African-American to be elected Mayor in the city’s 200 year history. Judge Reed is no stranger to having the lights shine upon him, as he was also the first African-American to be elected to the Probate Court. Now will his election energize and mobilize the stagnant vote of African-Americans in Alabama to show up in 2020?
While Judge Reed was making history, in Fort Worth, another Star was being gunned down in their own home. This past Saturday, while playing video games with her teenage nephew, Atatiana Jefferson, was shot and killed by police investigating a NON-EMERGENCY call of an open door by a neighbor. Upon police arrival and discovery of individuals in the home, police open fire upon 28yr old Atatiana Jefferson, killing her.
In yet another case, another white police officer, shot and killed Air Force veteran Anthony Hill, who was suffering from mental illness, and wandering in the middle of the street, naked running in the direction of the police, when the officer opened fire killing Hill. Sgt. Robert Olsen was found Not Guilty today because he told jurors he was scared to death of unarmed, demented, and naked Air Force veteran Anthony Hill.
So, tonight we look at A Star is Born, while Another is Killed.
Joining me tonight is political strategist and educator, Nate Benham.
