Description

At just fifteen years old, Mariam is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed, a bitter man nearly twice her age. Nearly two decades later, in a time of increasing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila. Forced to leave her home, she joins Mariam’s unhappy household. Over time, the two women form a deep and unbreakable bond, their friendship growing into a relationship as close as that of sisters, or even mother and daughter.

As the years pass, the Taliban rise to power in Afghanistan, and Kabul's streets echo with gunfire and bomb blasts. Life becomes a daily struggle against hunger, violence, and fear, pushing the women to their limits. Yet, amid the despair, love has the power to inspire extraordinary acts of bravery and resilience. It is love that ultimately prevails, transcending death and destruction.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a powerful portrait of a country in turmoil, a story of family and friendship set against a harsh and unforgiving time. It is a tale of an unlikely connection, and the indestructible love that can flourish even in the most impossible of circumstances.
