Description

In this episode, we discuss Sam Langford, widely considered as one of the greatest fighter's in history never to win a world title. Sam's career, which was predominantly in the United States in the early 1900's, came at a time when segregation was rife and as a result, very few black fighters got an opportunity to fight for world titles. We explore Sam's early life, career and his legendary rivalries with the likes of Stanley Ketchel, Jack Johnson and many others. We also examine Sam's later life, which sadly ended in tragic circumstances and consider his place amongst the greats of the sport. Finally, we bring a unique perspective on Sam's status as one of boxing's greatest uncrowned champions and strongly implore boxing historians and the rich keepers of our sport to reconsider this status. Sam's story covers issues of race, class and poverty and you do not need to be a boxing fan to enjoy this episode. We hope you enjoy. SFX from Freesound.org by 18hiltc & benboncan
