Welcome to the True Talk Café Podcast Ep. 9 - Dad Duties: A Man of Many Hats
It's June and we're celebrating Father's Day! In 1972 during his re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed an official proclamation setting Father’s Day permanently on the third Sunday in June nationwide. However, it took over 50 years for fathers to receive recognition for the positive impact they have on their families!
Show agenda:
- How did father's day come to fruition?
- Guests Questions:
- Can you give us an example where you encouraged your child(ren) to take a risk in their lives?
- Can you articulate how your love for your daughter has impacted her social interactions with others?
- Have you witnessed a dad that is absent from the home establish his continuity of love with his child(ren)? If so, do you have a specific example you can share? Or what would you recommend to a father who is struggling with the distancing of their children.
- What challenges do fathers face?
- Have you always been the breadwinner in your family? If not, how did you feel about yourself when you switched traditional roles? Was your pride and/or ego effected?
- Survey Results:
Today’s fathers have started to take on roles vastly different from fathers of previous generations. In the last 20 to 30 years, research has increasingly focused on fathers due to the growing role modern day fathers play in caregiving. A study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) found that fathers tended to be more involved in caregiving when:
· they worked fewer hours than other fathers.
· they had positive psychological adjustment characteristics (e.g., high self-esteem, lower
· levels of depression and hostility, and coping well with the major tasks of adulthood)
· mothers worked more hours than other mothers.
· mothers reported greater marital intimacy.
· when children were boys.
